How to Reduce Vulnerability to Fake News Among Social Media Users in Nigeria

Abstract

Objective: This study sought to determine how Nigerian social media users can be less vulnerable to fake news.

Methodology: The study is a qualitative research that used Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) for data collection. A total of 40 participants took part in the study, while the results were presented in pros format.

Result: The study's results showed that social media users in Nigeria are highly vulnerable to fake news. Equally, the results showed that media literacy education is needed to make social media users less vulnerable to fake news. Also, there is a need to implement fact-checking tools and collaborate between the Nigerian government and technology companies to reduce the influx of fake news on social media platforms available in Nigeria.

Conclusion: Many Nigerians are vulnerable to fake news, and they need training to reduce their vulnerability to it.
