Journalists' Knowledge, Perception and Use of Freedom of Information Law in Nigeria

Abstract

Objective: This study sought to assess the Nigerian journalists' knowledge, perception and use of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Law in Nigeria. Three research objectives were formulated for the study, which includes determining the journalists’ knowledge of FOI law and its application in their duties. Examine their perception of the FOI law about their job deliverables and ascertain how it has helped facilitate the roles they perform in Society.

Method: The study employed a quantitative survey method, drawing a sample size from members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Enugu Chapel. A total of 160 journalists were surveyed, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while the results were presented in tables. 

Results: The study found that the journalists were well knowledgeable on the FOI law in Nigeria. Also, their perception of the FOI law is favourable and favourable. Lastly, the study found that the extent to which FOI has helped facilitate their jobs is to a medium extent.

Conclusion: Although FOI Act is useful to journalism practice in Nigeria, the government should lessen the bureaucratic strain attached to getting information through the FOI law in order to propel the dividends of democracy in the country.
